Wendell Phillips

Vancouver Based Wendell Phillips (www.wendellphillips.com) began his photojournalism career as a staff news photographer in 1981. He's since earned over 20 Picture of the Year awards in categories of news, feature, sports, pictorial and photo essay. He was voted Canada's New Photographer of Year in 1988 and nominated Canadian Photojournalist of the Year in 2007 and 2009. After 15 years in newspapers and television news Phillips makes his living with international media and numerous global agency photo departments. His images have appeared in over a hundred publications and networks that include BBC World News, New York Times, South China Morning Post and Time Magazine. In 2006 his international AIDS work was exhibited at United Nations in New York City. In 2009 he received the International Understanding through Photography Award by the Photographic Society of America for outstanding contributions to photography, lecturing and publications. He's won Gold and Silver awards at the National Magazine Awards in photo essay categories.

Wendell has been assigned and flown to five continents making pictures in over 60 countries. He's covered war zones, natural disasters, world leaders, professional sport, everyday life and natural wonder. Assignments have included stories Lebanon, Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo, Palestinian territories, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Haiti, Greenland, Burma to name a few.
