Lightning® PCIe Enterprise Solid State Accelerators (SSAs) create connections between storage and server or workstation processors, accelerating application execution and maximizing performance. Lightning PCIe SSAs feature a proprietary controller to exponentially increase the ability to handle big data requests, alleviate I/O bottlenecks, and increase bandwidth. Lightning PCIe SSAs can be used as boot drives, or they can be combined with FlashSoft® server-side caching software as a caching device for up to 3x greater application performance.

No. The Lightning PCIe SSA is a half-height PCIe card with a host interface that is a (x4) PCI Express base specification Gen. 2.0. It plugs into the PCIe bus of an industry standard server or workstation.
Is the Lightning PCIe SSA reliable? The Lightning PCIe SSA is extremely reliable with an UBERof less than one sector in 1017 bits read, which meets the requirements specified by the JEDEC JESD218 standard, which calls out for a minimal UBER of less than one sector in 1016 bits read for Enterprise‐class SSDs.
Is any special device driver software required for the Lightning PCIe SSA? Yes. The Lightning PCIe SSA comes with device driver software that must be installed on the server.
Can the Lightning PCIe SSA be used with HDD’s or other cards such as HBAs NICs, etc. in the same server? Yes. The Lightning PCIe SSA takes up one PCIe bus slot alongside these other devices.
When deploying Lightning PCIe SSAs, can HDDs also reside in the server? Yes. The Lightning PCIe SSAs acts just like another disk.
Do Lightning PCIe SSAs really increase the performance of servers? Yes, by placing the SSA inside the server or workstation and tightly coupling the storage close to the host processor, the PCIe interface eliminates the delay of the RAID controller to accelerate application execution and maximize performance. Also, SanDisk Lightning PCIe SSAs can increase a server’s performance by reducing a server’s I/O wait time to get data for processing. SAS HDDs have an average wait time of half a disk revolution before the read heads are positioned over the desired data. The SanDisk Lightning PCIe SSAs have no moving parts, so data is accessed much faster thus reducing server wait time.
Do Lightning PCIe SSAs require any additional DRAM to be installed into the server or workstation? No. Unlike some other PCIe cards that require use of valuable DRAM, Lightning PCIe SSAs proprietary design has minimal impact on CPU utilization and eliminates the need for additional DRAM.
