Lightning Eco™ Gen. II SAS SSDs offer solid I/O cost to performance benefits with low latency data access for high quality of service (QoS). Available in 19nm eMLC, Lightning Eco SSDs are designed for read-intensive applications such as data warehousing, media streaming, video on demand (VOD), web-based applications, virtual tape libraries (VTL) and file servers with a heavy read workload comprised of a 90/10 read/write mix.
This next generation Lightning ® SSD offers a feature-rich robust design combined with SanDisk’s innovative parallel processing architecture to deliver full data path protection (supports T10-DIF), temperature based power control, SED instant secure erase, an MTBF of 2.5 million hours**MTBF – Mean Time Between Failures based on parts stress analysis. and power fail protection.
Database workloads require fast and accurate writes to disk, as well as easy access to the stored data. Lightning Eco Gen. II SAS SSDs support database workloads, even in virtualized computing environments. This is important because many IT organizations are consolidating database workloads to run on fewer physical servers, resulting in more efficient infrastructures that host business workloads in less data center space and require less power and cooling. What happens to the data on the SSD if the power is turned off ? The Lightning Eco™ Gen. II SAS SSD retains the data just as an HDD would.
Is a special enclosure required for the Lightning Eco Gen. II SAS SSD ? The Lightning Eco Gen. II SAS SSD is compatible with any industry standard enclosure that supports a 2.5 inch form factor and 12Gb/s or 6Gb/s SAS interface.
Is any special device driver software required for the Lightning Eco Gen. II SAS SSD ? The Lightning Eco Gen. II SAS SSD requires no special device driver software.
Can the Lightning Eco Gen. II SAS SSD be deployed with HDD’s or other types of SDDs in the same enclosure ? Just as with HDD’s, mixing of disk drives with different workload profiles will render unpredictable results. Therefore mixing of devices is not recommended.
When deploying Lightning Eco Gen. II SAS SSDs, do all HDDs have to be eliminated from an enterprise ? No. A desired number of existing HDDs can be retained so long as they reside in a different disk shelf than the Lightning Eco Gen. II SAS SSDs.
Is the Lightning Eco Gen. II SAS SSD reliable ? The Lightning Eco Gen. II SAS SSD is extremely reliable with a reliability rate of one in 1017 bits read, which meets the requirements specified by the JEDEC 218 standard, which calls out for a minimal UBER of one in 1016 bits read for Enterprise‐class SSDs.
Do Lightning Eco Gen. II SAS SSDs really increase the performance of servers ? Yes. Lightning Eco SAS SSDs can increase a server’s performance by reducing a server’s I/O wait time to get data for processing. SAS HDDs have an average wait time of half a disk revolution before the read heads are positioned over the desired data. The SanDisk Lightning Eco Gen. II SAS SSDs have no moving parts, so data is accessed much faster thus reducing server wait time.
Can Lightning Eco Gen. II SAS SSDs greatly consolidate/reduce storage footprint ? Yes. With HDDs performance is directly related to spindle count, so the more HDD spindles, the greater the performance. Traditionally, in the HDD environment short stroking has been used to obtain the level of performance required – short stroking is the technique of greatly over-provisioning HDD spindles to obtain a desired performance level while only requiring a fraction of the over-provisioned storage capacity. One Lightning Eco Gen. II SAS SSD can achieve up to 180K/35K Random Read/Write IOPS which would take several full HDD storage shelves to match the number of IOPS. So in essence, one Lightning Eco Gen. II SAS SSD can replace scores of HDDs, greatly reducing footprint and energy consumption.
